Given a literal kick start from a Kickstarter campaign, this quarterly soccer magazine is home to America’s best soccer stories and most striking art and design. We were passed the ball (so to speak) on the magazine’s redesign. We dove head first into the world of soccer to bring the field into each feature, photo essay, and infographic on the page by incorporating tons of color and spectacular illustrations.
It’s hard to bring something new to the world, and the team at Howler did just that. To bring an innovative project like this over the goal line, we guided them through our publication process to create an award-winning magazine design that won a trophy of its own. The first step in this process is what we call “defining what is ‘ours’” This is where we gain more clarity as to what, who, and how we belong. What is Our community? Our culture? Our brand? Our aspirations? Our Role? Our customer? and so much more. We do this in all of our magazine and publication work, including with Coca-Cola Consolidated, Paste, and Georgia State University. This strategic brand development process ensures that we thoughtfully integrate brand identity, high-quality magazine design, and digital marketing collateral to help an amazing team, with winning content, reach a greater audience.
Howler was awarded “Best Redesign” in the 2018 Society of Publication Designers awards. It was a finalist in three other categories, including “Magazine of the Year,” where it stood up to competition from New York Magazine, The California Sunday Magazine, The New York Times for Kids, The New York Times Magazine, Glamour, National Geographic, and GQ Style.
